README (c) 1993 by DP_BYTER SURVEY LAND YOURSELF
You can survey it yourself, quickly, easily, and inexpensively. You can find
lost or disputed corners and lines, calculate acreage, and write land
descriptions such that anyone can find your boundary at a later time. You can
establish test plots, subdivide property, layout building foundations, formal
landscapes & gaming fields, hide & recover buried treasure, or even map a
cave. Despite the fact that this surveying method was devised to survey caves
with the help of a computer, neither a cave nor a computer is necessary.
No magic! The reason that you can survey it yourself so quickly, easily, and
inexpensively is that you accept an error of 1% or 2%. Normally, a precision
of 98% or 99% is much more than sufficient for my purposes. It could be for
yours too. This is about the same precision as you can draw with a pencil,
paper, ruler, and protractor. If you are real careful.
There are several sections. First is "SIY", "Survey It Yourself: A Quick,
Easy, and Inexpensive Preliminary Survey Using the Compass & Tape Method". If
printed, "SIY" is presently 83 pages and 2 graphs long. I certainly didn't
need that much space to teach you to survey, but I included lots of extras.
These instructions are written in AMER_ENG.LNG [that's Standard American
English with occasional lapses into British, Newspeak, computerese and
pseudocode]. Your computer is assumed to be a pencil and paper.

I find it much easier to work with a printout than with the computer screen.
Scribble on your printout; you can always make another clean copy.
Second is "CAVEMAP1", my personal program (in GW-BASIC) to handle the data and
draw a map on my printer [but probably not on your printer! Eventually the
computer moguls and software magnates will realize that there is more profit in
user-friendly than in user-hostile. Meanwhile...]. >GWBASIC CAVEMAP1 <enter>
Third is "RETIRE", some information about cheap land for sale here in the
Kentucky Boonies, a good place to retire young or just have a vacation place.
Fourth is "FILLER", since Nature abhors a ½ empty disk.
And last is a "TAILER", files which I wanted at the end of the directory.
Please, no mentally disabled. I'm only a guide here. I refuse to train you
what to think. My goal is merely to demonstrate how to think. If you don't
understand the difference, then don't bother me.
If you have questions about surveying it yourself, it helps if you send me a
copy of the deed or whatever and tell me what you want to do. If you enclose
written permission to use it, then you might find your survey used as an
example on my disk.
[Pssst! Page Dn to continue.]
Why am I giving away this valuable information? No magic. This is my
advertising. I'm satisfied to make my money from selling the preliminary
surveying instruments. So please copy and pass this information along.
Please note that there is presently a malicious war being fought on the hard
disks of America, between the forces of $10.00 software and the forces of
$1000. software. Some diabolically sociopathic programmer may have insinuated
a malignant warrior for the malevolent forces of evil into my code, either
before or after it left my shop.
Please be careful with company data! If you have important information on your
computer, then stop here. Please talk to someone who knows how to protect your
data before using this disk. And if you ever even suspect that my disk has
caused you any trouble, then immediately contact me.
